These courses provide instruction on patents, inventions, and intellectual property to engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and managers in corporations of all sizes and technologies.  Many are approved by New York State to meet Continuing Education requirements for licensed Professional Engineers.  Our courses can also be customized and/or bundled to suit client needs.  All courses include written course materials that are downloadable from our password-accessible FTP site.

Our 200-series courses are all taught using "live" on-line demonstrations on the USPTO website.  In venues where a wireless connection is available (including the Lennox Tech Center), attendees are encouraged to bring their wireless-compatible laptops and follow the online course navigation for an optimum learning experience.  In many instances, the courses can be customized in real time, with demonstrations performed according to specific attendee requests.  All courses can be provided at the Lennox Tech Center, at client facilities, or other suitable venues.

PE101     Introduction to Patents

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of patents:  the definition of a patent; history and legal basis of patents; types of patents; patentability; patentable subject matter; inventorship and ownership; good practices for inventors and businesses; invention disclosures; content, structure, and requirements of a patent application; and patent application and prosecution processes in the USPTO.  Available in 1 hour and 1.5 hour versions.  NYS approved for 1.0 and 1.5 PDH for licensed Professional Engineers.


PE110     Writing a Quality Invention Disclosure

Attendees will learn the key attributes of a comprehensive invention disclosure, as well as how to write a disclosure that can serve as a valuable legal document and subsequently support efficient and cost-effective patent application preparation.  One hour.

PE200     Fundamentals of Patent Searching

Attendees will learn how to perform basic online patent searches in the USPTO website.  Course topics and demonstrations include basic keyword searches; advanced searches using multiple search fields; identification of USPTO classes and subclasses relevant to an invention; class and subclass searches; assignee searches; and foreign/international searchable patent databases.  Attendees are encouraged to bring wireless laptops to follow along with the live online navigation.  Search demonstrations may be customized to suit specific client needs if requested in advance.  Two to four hours depending upon client needs and interests.

PE210     Electronic Access to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Public Records

Attendees will learn how to access the broad spectrum of patent data available online in the USPTO: issued patents, published patent applications, Public PAIR information on patents and applications, assignment records, maintenance fee payments, and the roster of licensed patent practitioners.  The value of the information and how to use it will also be discussed.  Attendees are encouraged to bring wireless laptops to follow along with the live online navigation.  Demonstrations may be customized to suit specific client needs.  Available in 1 hour and 1.5 hour versions.  NYS approved for 1.0 and 1.5 PDH for licensed Professional Engineers.

PE220     Accessing Patent Application File Histories in Public PAIR in the USPTO

Attendees will learn the detailed procedures for accessing the online prosecution file histories of issued patents and published pending applications that are available in Public PAIR.  The value of the information and how to use it will also be discussed.  Attendees are encouraged to bring wireless laptops to follow along with the live online navigation.  Demonstrations may be customized to suit specific client needs.  One hour.

PE230     Online Searching of Technologies and Patents in the USPTO

Attendees will learn the basics of patent searching within specific technological fields, including identifying the appropriate technology classes and subclasses.  Attendees are encouraged to bring wireless laptops to follow along with the live online navigation.  Demonstrations may be customized to suit specific client needs.  Available in 1 hour and 1.5 hour versions.  NYS approved for 1.0 and 1.5 PDH for licensed Professional Engineers..

PE240     Patent and Assignment Searching for Competitive Surveillance and Due Diligence

Attendees will learn methods of searching the patent literature to obtain critical business information in areas such as competitive surveillance and due diligence investigations.  Topics include monitoring the prosecution progress of a pending published patent application through Public PAIR;  searching patent assignment records to determine patent title and ownership; and searching patent maintenance fees to determine patent expiration.  Attendees are encouraged to bring wireless laptops to follow along with the live online navigation.  Demonstrations may be customized to suit specific client needs.  One hour.

PE300     3D Models - Use and Optimization for Patent Application Preparation

Attendees will learn how 3D product design models can be useful in supporting invention disclosure, patent application preparation, and patent litigation.  Topics include how to optimize a 3D model to support a patent practitioner in patent application preparation, and modeling "do's and don'ts" with respect to patents and invention disclosures.  One hour.
